The short answer
The 991 is the seventh generation of the 911, sold in the US from model year 2012 through 2019. The 992 is the eighth generation, model year 2020 to today. The 991.1 (2012–2015, Carrera) is the last naturally aspirated base 911; the 991.2 (2017–2019, Carrera) introduced turbocharging to the Carrera lineup, with the GT3 keeping a high-revving naturally aspirated flat-six. The 992 kept the turbocharged Carreras and moved to an 8-speed PDK, a wider body across every trim, and a more digital cabin.

Every 991 and 992 variant, explained
Carrera and Carrera S — The core of the lineup. 991.1 Carrera and Carrera S are naturally aspirated. From the 991.2 onward Carrera and Carrera S use a twin-turbo flat-six.
Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S — All-wheel drive. From the 991 on, 4 and 4S use the same wider rear body.
Targa 4 and Targa 4S — All-wheel drive with the folding glass-and-fabric roof reintroduced on the 991. Carried over to the 992.
Carrera GTS — The Powerkit / wide-body / center-lock package introduced on the 991.1, continued on the 991.2 and 992.1, and offered in rear-drive, all-wheel drive, Cabriolet and Targa.
Carrera T — A lighter, more driver-focused Carrera. Introduced on the 991.2 with the manual gearbox standard, continued on the 992.1 and 992.2.
GT3 and GT3 RS — Naturally aspirated, rear-wheel drive, built for the track. The 991.1 GT3 and GT3 RS were PDK-only. The 991.2 GT3 added a six-speed manual. The 992 GT3 and GT3 Touring offer the six-speed manual; the 992 GT3 RS is PDK-only.
911 R and 911 S/T — Limited, manual-only driver's cars. 911 R on the 991.2. 911 S/T on the 992.1.
Turbo and Turbo S — All-wheel drive, PDK only. The 991.1 Turbo S moved to the current wide-mouth Turbo look; the 992.1 Turbo S added the wider body and larger brakes.
911 Dakar — A 992.1 off-road 911 with raised suspension, protective fenders and all-terrain tires. Limited production. PDK only.
Sport Classic, Speedster, Heritage Design — Limited editions on both generations. Each is valued car by car.
Manual vs PDK
A six- or seven-speed manual is available on most Carrera, Carrera S, 4S, GTS, Carrera T and (from the 991.2 on) GT3 trims. The Turbo, Turbo S, GT3 RS and Dakar are PDK-only. PDK is faster, smoother, and the easier daily car; the manual is more involving and tends to carry a resale premium. If you want a manual GT3, the 991.2 was the first — the 992 continues it.
Which one should you buy?
- Last naturally aspirated base 911: 991.1 Carrera or Carrera S.
- All-weather daily: 991 or 992 Carrera 4S or Targa 4S.
- Driver's car with three pedals: 991.2 Carrera T, 992.1 Carrera GTS manual, or 992.2 Carrera T.
- Track-focused weekend: 991.2 or 992 GT3 (manual or PDK).
- Collector: 911 R, 911 S/T, GT3 RS, Sport Classic, Speedster, Dakar — buy on provenance and history.
What to check before you buy
991 (both phases). The electromechanical steering replaced the hydraulic system — feel is different, not broken. On the 991.1 Carrera, ask for service records on the plastic coolant distributor housing. On the 991.2 Carrera, confirm the service history on the turbocharger side and the IPAS valve.
992. The engine family continues from the 991.2 Carrera, with revisions. Service records matter more than any single mechanical concern on this generation — a new-ish car with sparse history is worth less than an older one with a known mechanic.
All 991/992 GT cars. Over-rev reports from the engine computer, clutch condition (manual), suspension corner weights, and track-day documentation. GT cars with evidence of light street use alongside track time are easier to live with than museum pieces.
