The 964 Turbo occupies a specific place in the 911 lineage. Where the 993 Turbo that followed introduced twin turbochargers and standard all-wheel drive, the 964 Turbo used the earlier single-turbo 3.3L architecture (and, on late examples, the 3.6L revision) and remained rear-wheel drive — closer in character to the 930 Turbo it descended from than to the modern 911 Turbo it preceded.
